Owen W. Dukelow, 1922-2007

My Dad died early this morning at Methodist Hospital. The following is the obit that my Mom wrote.

OBITUARY

Dukelow, Owen Warner, Sr. of Bloomington MN, Age: 84
Born December 11, 1922 in Minneapolis MN
Died May 27, 2007 of complications of non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

Preceded in death by parents John and Ida Jessa (McCullough) Dukelow; brothers, William (Wid) and wife, Evelyn of San Francisco; Burton and wife, Lotte of El Paso and their son, Alfred; and Howard Dukelow of Des Moines. Sisters: Elizabeth who died in infancy; and Beatrice Dukelow Venta; and his first-born son who died at birth. Also his in-laws, Arvid:and Corinna Stafford Schmeckpeper of Little Falls, Myron and Doloris Sanden Stafford of Minneapolis, Harold Hansen of Grand Rapids MN, and grandniece, Jenny Guyer of Coleraine.

Survived by wife, Harriet; daughters, Ruth of Lansing MI; Deborah of Bloomington; son, Owen Dukelow, Jr.(Laura Koppes) of Tigard OR; grandchildren, Madeline, Patrick and Ryan Koppes Dukelow of Tigard; and Catherine Dukelow of Bloomington. Also surviving are sisters-in-law: Ruth Olson Dukelow of Des Moines; and Gloria Stafford Hansen of Grand Rapids MN, and 12 nieces and nephews, 3 cousins and friends.

Graduate of North High School of Minneapolis; B.A., M.A., and Ph.D University of Minnesota; B.Div. Union Theological Seminary, NYC; and ordained by Minneapolis
Presbytery and, since retirement, continued his membership in Washington Presbytery, Washington PA He served in World War II in the Army in Co. 1, 301st Infantry Regiment of the 94th Division in Europe, and following the end of the War was sent by the Army to attend Cambridge University in England during the Michelmas term, and was honorably discharged in April 1946. He married Harriet Stafford on August 26, 1951 in Grace Presbyterian Church in Minneapolis.

Owen taught at Sir George Williams University, Montreal, Quebec for six years, and wrote book reviews for the Montreal Gazette. He was Professor of Philosophy and Chairman of the Department of Philosophy at Washington and Jefferson College of Washington PA for twenty years. Dr. Dukelow was named Professor Emeritus and given an honorary degree of D. Litt. on retirement in 1989. He wrote book reviews for the Pittsburgh Gazette while there. His Sabbatical was spent at Yale University in 1980 as a research fellow where he studied C.S. Lewis. He received the University of Minnesota College of Liberal Arts Alumni Award for Notable Achievement in 1994 after serving on the Board.

Memorial Service will be held at Oak Grove Presbyterian Church, 2200 W. Old Shakopee Road, Bloomington, 55431 on Wednesday, May 30, 11:00am. If you so wish, in lieu of flowers, memorials can be to Hennepin County Library or Oak Grove Presbyterian Church. Private Interment Fort Snelling.
