Recommended books this year
Some of the good books I read in 2005:
Marilynne Robinson. Gilead.
Jacqueline Winspear. Maisie Dobbs. [Recommended to me last Christmas by my cousin Kate Dukelow - thanks Kate!]
Jon Hassler. The Dean's List.
Jasper Fforde. The Big Over Easy. [I loved this quirky book - a new Nursery Rhymes series from Fforde. Fforde's Tuesday Next series is also worth reading - they defy description but are lots of fun to read.]
Miyuke Miyabe. Shadow family. [A Japanese crime novel about internet games.]
Christopher Paul Curtis. The Watsons Go to Birmingham 1963. [A children's book. My favorite book read in 2005. I listened to it on audioCD read by Levar Burton.]
I also read lots of mysteries, including new titles by Elizabeth George, Jonathan Kellerman, Kathy Reichs, Nevada Barr, and Tony Hillerman.

Hi Ruth, from Jan Aronson
I read and did a review of Gilead this year. Really loved the book but many in my book group thought it was hard to follow "who was who". I read it carefully a second time and loved her use of language and the family names came through much more . Marilynne is in Iowa City and my sister-in-law there is in a study group with her. That would be fun. THe other book I really liked was The Kite Runner, a book that correctly describes Afghanistan according to our friends here who lived there several years.
