A Good Weekend!

Last weekend began with the dismal news at our annual meeting on Friday that MLC (where I work) is heading into tough times. I was pretty down last weekend, but fortunately this weekend was much better.

On Friday, we celebrated Tish's birthday with dinner at Cancun - wonderful food as usual, including free flans courtesy of the waiter. After dinner, Tish showed her slides from Italy - Florence, Rome and Tuscany - beautiful countryside in Tuscany and art and architecture in the cities. It took me back to Prof. Hugh Taylor's Art 101 class in college. Someday I'll have to go to Italy, but for now, it was just as wonderful to hear about Tish and Anne's trip and see the photos.

On Saturday night, Daisy generously treated me and Carol to the Lansing Symphony concert. The first piece was a saxophone concerto - very different for a symphony orchestra. The composer, Maslanka, was there and he came onstage to introduce the music (I have to admit I did not understand a lot of what he said in relation to the actual music, but the concerto was outstanding). The second part of the concert was Beethoven's Fourth - not one I'm familiar with, but I really enjoyed it. Thanks Daisy! It was fun, too, to go with Carol who plays oboe in a community band to get her perspective on the concert. A really delightful, special evening spent with good friends.

Today - Sunday - our bell choir played in the 10:30am worship service. This was my first performance playing the bells in church, so of course I was a nervous wreck. We went early to practice before the service (thank goodness!). We played the spiritual, "My Lord, what a morning." For this song, I play the highest bell (the B above high C) and the lowest bell (the A below the C below middle C). We played during the Voluntary at the beginning of the service, and it went beautifully. I was so relieved that I played all my notes and that I played them at the right time - phewf.

And more happy news - I finished machine-quilting Rachel's quilt this afternoon. Now all I have left is the binding and the label, which I'm pretty sure I can finish before I fly to Minnesota later this week. I'm off to Traverse City now for training all day tomorrow, so the binding will have to wait a couple days. I'll post a photo when it is completed.
