My Christmas Amaryllis

Update - after I posted the first photos (# 3 and #4 below), I turned off the computer and went back into the kitchen to find that the second bud (#1 and #2 below) had also bloomed - beautiful!

Mary gave me a potted amaryllis bulb for Christmas in early December. I set it out and watered it for six weeks while it remained completely dormant. Then at the end of January, a tiny green shoot appeared, and then it grew quickly over the next five weeks until the stalk was 28" tall. The bud looked like it was going to bloom on my birthday but it waited a couple more days and finally one of the three blooms opened up today. It is a lovely rich pink color - the perfect door into spring! And all the snow melted today too! Spring has almost sprung!

  • I think they call them "Easter Amaryllis" when you plant them at Christmas and they bloom at this time of year. My grandmother used to have an Amaryllis bulb that she would plant in the fall and it would be in bloom at Christmas. It is very similar to the Christmas/Easter Cactus we all know about. Very pretty.
