Books I've been reading

Some of the books I've read in the past couple months:

Mysteries by Louise Penny - The Cruelest Month, A Rule Against Murder, Dead Cold (aka A Fatal Grace). I'm enjoying this series set in the Eastern Townships of Montreal. The detective is Inspector Gamache from the Surete, and the setting is a small town with eccentric characters - "cosies" with humor, similar to the Agatha Raisin books. Enjoyable reading.

Books by Carl Hiassen - Basketcase and Nature Girl. These are a couple of Hiassen's earlier books. He's always funny, and these two titles are quite entertaining. I listened to both on CD in the car on some longer trips for work - made the trips fun. :)

Kathy Reichs' latest, 206 Bones. Another good mystery in her Temperance Brennan series set in Montreal.

Asterios Polyp by Michael Mazzuchelli. I really enjoyed this one. It is a graphic novel, and the author/artist does an incredible job of using every detail of the drawings (including different typeface for each speaker) to tell the story of an architect. His home is burned down, his wife has left him, and he's now on the road. Recommended! Tell me if you read this one - I'd love to hear others' impressions of this novel.

Nevada Barr's 13 1/2. I don't recommend this one - especially if you like Barr's national parks series. There are no national parks in this one - no Anna Pigeon either. The theme is serial killers who murder their families. It is really well-written but not what I wanted to read from Nevada Barr.

  • Gosh, Ruth you will have my reading list growing. I certainly don't read as many books in a month as you, so I like recommendations and can choose things I think I'll like. Didn't know Carl Hiassen wrote books before the Girl with The Dragon Tatto. Want to try the graphic novel. And I do have to admit that a serial killer of family members is just too creepy.
