Best Christmas Present

Debbie gave me my Christmas present early this year - a bird advent calendar! Perfect for me as it combines two of my favorite things, birds and advent calendars. I couldn't wait until Monday to start opening the doors (you'll see bird #1 is already on its perch). I have it displayed on Gramma's walnut table. The best advent calendar ever!

A few years ago, I gave Debbie and Catherine an advent calendar from LLBean - a wooden tree with Christmas ornaments behind each door. It's been fun to see it at their house every Christmas. I love the little card advent calendars too - I still have one that Ellen and her family gave to me years ago.

And speaking of advent calendars, earlier this fall, Debbie bought the WORST advent calendar ever. I think it was a school fundraiser. It was made of narrow flimsy cardboard, and behind each door, there was a piece of waxy melted and rehardened chocolate that tasted like the cardboard. When we were in town for Rachel's wedding, Debbie offered all the relatives to open a door and sample the chocolate - not surprisingly, no one asked for a second piece.

  • What a neat and unusual Advent calendar! I've not ever seen one quite like it. Since you started a little early, does that mean Christmas is coming early to your house? Congratulations to Catherine --- it will be such a great experience for her. I've always liked the music from "Music Man" --- in fact, while I am thinking about it --- I like the music from most of those early musicals --- like "The King and I", "Carousel", "Oklahoma", etc. --- I'm humming, as I type! Have a nice holiday weekend.

  • Egads! Catherine got a great part. I also went to see the Music Man at East Lansing High School. Tom's cousin Tim is the proud father of Rachel Dalton who played Marion! She was so good I cried.
